Here are a couple of excerpts from a book I'm working on: Tales of Yasha's Horses.
Section One: Winter the Wild Racer
Chapter 1
The grass swayed as the wind blew it slowly with each gust. The sun rose slowly over the hill and made the sky pink, with a bit of yellow and orange. The leader of the Perfecto’s herd stood in the distance, watching as the five families of horses awoke. Then he saw him: the horse as black as ash and with eyes as red as fire. A loner he had welcomed to his herd after a wrangler accident. Often he wished he had never let him in. This black horse may have been quiet, but usually, horses have a motive behind that.
Perfecto walked down to meet him, of whom he was called, Chimney, but was stopped by his wife, Highlight. “Good morning sweetheart,” she whinnied, but Perfecto did not pay attention. He was too busy watching Chimney scare off a little colt. He bounded toward him, shouting threats. When the chestnut colored horse reached him, Chimney was already glaring, “I will kick you out my herd if…IF YOU DO NOT IMPROVE!!!” he spat. “Well,” Chimney spat back, “When you die, I will become leader of the Perfecto’s herd; even if I can’t change the name!!!” “You couldn’t!!!” “Oh, yes, I can. I am the second biggest, smartest, toughest horse in this herd; even with a bad leg. And if…IF YOU DO NOT EXCEPT THAT, YOU ARE BREAKING OLD WILD HORSE TRIDITION!!!”
Perfecto winced, and looked as if he was about to cry. He imagined Chimney, turning the perfect Perfecto’s herd into “A Living Nightmare”; even if that wasn’t the name. Chimney got satisfaction out of seeing Perfecto wince, and stepped on his hoof as he walked away. Perfecto bit his lip as tears came to his eyes. He wanted to insult Chimney, but he dared not open his mouth. If he did, he would truly start crying.
Section Two: Dove the Stern Mother
Chapter 1
“…Here by that Yasha has dropped out of the race!” Reporters swarmed around Yasha asking questions, wondering why. Yasha kept repeating “No comment! No comments!” but the reporters kept asking questions about why she had dropped out of the race. “Oh mom!” Yasha cried, “I can’t take this anymore! I wanna go home!” Mrs. Flamingo nodded her head and pushed her way out of the crowd, making a path for her daughter to get through. Police helped her. “Stand back! Make way! Stand back! Get out of the way you buffoon! Stand back! What are you stupid? I said get out of way!” The Flamingo’s could hardly get to their trailer home and when they did, what would you know, more reporters. Mr. Flamingo opened the door for his wife and child and slammed it on the heads of the reporters who tried to get in, locking it quickly.
