Soft green ferns brushed against the wildcat as he stalked the forest floor. The evening twilight cast long shadows across the dense foliage and the sounds of the night echoed over the entire valley. The wildcat had all senses trained on one particular being, his ears flicked forwards as silent paw pads shortened the distance between hunter and prey. As the chosen victim came into sight, the wildcat slowed his breathing, every hair on his striped pelt was motionless with tension. Muscles bunched, ready for the final spring - and a nearby owl screeched, terrifying the prey..
The wildcat's shoulders hunched, his green eyes saddened with loss as the spooked custard cream made it's escape right under his nose - Windsor sat up abruptly, suddenly wide awake, but the sad expression remained in his eyes. He yawned widely and flicked his tail round to cover his paws. Next to him his brother Regent opened one eye and cast an expert gaze over Windsor.
'It escaped again didn't it?' He muttered drowsily, still gazing at Windsor without blinking.
Windsor nodded glumly and settled down again, tucking his paws under his chest. Not another word was spoken, it didn't need to be. Both cats knew the source of the disturbance, it had been happening continually for the past year.
Regent closed his eye again and was soon snuffling in his sleep, but Windsor continued to sit awake, his thoughts fixed on that elusive custard cream.
It's the only thing I miss about being a kittypet.. and I do miss them so. More importantly, what if I keep waking up like this forever?! Maybe I should go see a Medicine cat or something.. doubt they'd help me though, being as I'm a rogue and all. Y'know maybe some other rogue would know.. I'll ask tomorrow I think.. all I want is something to help me sleep.. yes, I'll ask around tomorrow!
The Maine Coon was so busy with his monologue that he didn't notice the crimson line creeping over the horizon..
'It is tomorrow, furball.' Regent mumbled from behind.
Windsor hadn't realised he'd been speaking aloud either. 'Sorry Reg, I'll let you sleep..' He stood, stretched, and padded slowly down the small hill the brothers had chosen as their temporary camp. A small trickling stream ran through the grasses alongside, and Windsor strolled down for a morning drink. The sun was just about visible over the distant mountain range, as the wildcat crouched above the surface of the glittering water..
