No sign of danger or a disturbance. ... At least, not for a long time.
Amberstar couldn't help but wonder at the silence. Could it be so easy? No trouble would befall on her clan, or on any clan? Boneclan was finally fallen? Amberstar could not have believed it was so simple. It was like a slight hunger that clawed at her belly, always there, always just nagging at the back of her mind.
But watching her kits play... She smiled softly. It almost put her worries at bay. She was happy and content. Food had been plentiful, the clan was at peace and carried on, and she had 3 kits to be happy over. That had been Blackheart's kits, nonetheless.
Shilokit was laying curled up amongst the leaves that had begun to fall, scattered mildly across the ground. All the leaves where green, and it struck a vibrant contrast with her black and white coat, mottled with the amber hue of her mother. And, the temperament of her father.
She gave a grouchy growl as a stray leave blew too close to her, and she swatted out her paw across the offending leaf, growling as it scattered away, almost as if she'd hurt it's feelings. Content that it had gone far enough away it would not invade her space again, she curled up, her tail tucked into her fluffy coat as she watched the Clan around her with sage eyes, ears flattened in case some poor sap wanted to come bother her.

Blackheart never believed in positive outcomes.
Perhaps the old deputy was slowly growing senile, although his sharp mind and even sharper claws never seemed to grow any duller, but he still saw the faces of his foes in the shadows. Even in such a lull he kept up constant, organized patrols – often times forsaking what time an old cat probably needed to rest to lead them himself. It didn’t matter to him, or even likely crossed his mind. The loyal tom padded back into camp, carrying a heavy dead rabbit in his jaws, but instead of immediately dropping the fresh kill into its proper location his yellow eyes swept the camp. He could see a flicker of golden fur as that insufferable, deceitful beast Greed slip away from the main camp, before his gaze settled on the beautiful Amberstar.
Even now, even though it was so…so wrong, his heart still burned with love and pride at the sight of the noble, magnificent she-cat and their three wonderful kits. Still Brushkit, grump Shilokit, clever Ghostkit…speaking of which, he could see his son was slowly attempting to sneak up on a cricket that had ventured too close to where he had been hiding, still clumsy but with all the innate promises to become a true warrior. He hadn’t been keeping track of the time, really, as he’d been keeping himself so busy, so prepared.
Just in case…just in case.
It would be very soon before the youngsters were apprenticed out, wouldn’t it? Time seemed like just a breath’s loss since they were nothing but mewling newborns….their first steps, their first words. If Blackheart wasn’t the cat he was he might’ve smiled at those fond memories, but instead he just grumped and padded over to Amberstar, dropping the kill at her paws in offering of it to her, before plopping down on his rump and rooted for a flea angrily in his side, uttering a string of grumbled curses and rants as the miserable beast that’s worse idea it ever made was to plague the tom.

In contrast to the grumpy little Shilokit was a little black warrior. The she-cat watched Amberstar's kit with a slight grin. That little one was definitely her father's daughter. Onyx liked trying to occasionally get up to mischief by encouraging the kits to do things that their mother and father probably wouldn't have encouraged, but she made sure to keep it just this side of misbehavior. After all, she had no desire to make either Blackheart or Amberstar angry with her, both for friendships' sake and because they were the leaders.
But she had trouble getting Shilokit to join in on the fun. Much as she would have had trouble getting Blackheart to join in any shenanigans, she presumed. It was all part of the amusement. But alas, right now there was not really anything to do. Onyx supposed she should go do the responsible adult thing and hunt something. But right as her mind reached this conclusion and she was getting up, a leaf, spurned by Shilokit, blew her general direction. With a little spazz of glee, Onyx hopped up and pounced on the leaf and then threw it in the air and chased it to the ground, apparently not noticing that she was about to crash into Blackheart and a huge rabbit he was carrying.
Surprised at the apparently sudden presence of the deputy, Onyx bounced away, the leaf in her mouth. She plopped her butt on the ground and tried to look angelic, feeling for all the world like an apprentice facing her mentor, even though it had been Amberstar, and not Blackheart, who had technically been her mentor. She grinned brightly at him.
"I was about to go hunt!" she chirped.

Sunpelt eased out of the den, holding back a yawn from last night's watch. His golden tail flicked casually, taking in the scene of his leader, Amberstar, coiled like a sun-bathing snake, and certainly not in any mood to converse. Her kits, and the pride and joy of the clan, dithered in their energetic kit way. Onyxpelt, an enthusiastic young warrior and friend of Sunpelt's, frolicked with a leaf, nearly colliding into Blackheart, the stone-strong deputy. A small smile slipped on his lips before he strolled into the clearing, taking his time, for the sun felt good on his strong shoulders, as he headed towards his deputy for further instruction.

Tenderly, pawstep by pawstep, the golden tom with the striking white paws and tail drifted closer to one of Amberstar's kits, the black and white one, Shilokit. He was accustomed to the kit's complete lack of tolerance... But he didn't care... Duo was accustomed to causing a bit of playful trouble in Greed's little gang... Not that he ever did such on purpose, but simply because impulsively he needed to just... PLAY!
Leaping, he landed right next to the kit, scattering leaves on impact. Rearing back split seconds later, he raised his paws in playful threat... However intently he insisted on play, was however intently his mind chose to wander. Of course, his bright orange eyes catching Greed's sly disappearance... What is he up to? He thought... Leaving himself fully exposed to the kit's retributions...

Amberstar purred at the appearance of her deputy and chosen... Mate? She took a careful and subtle glance at the food pile before deciding to accept his offering. She ran her forehead along his side as he dropped down beside her, tail flicking in a content state before she leaned her head down to pull aggressively at the side of the rabbit, keening her eyes on the rest of the clan.
All of them appeared to be hard-working. Well, aside from Onyxdart, who shot the grumpy tom an innocent look after clearly playing with the leaf. About to go hunt... Hah. But she would not deny the young warrior her playtime. Onyxdart was hardworking and loyal. She even managed to chuckle at the she-cat's antics.
As well as Sunpelt, who had decided to emerge into the warm atmosphere after having a long night of watch. She gave a light smile at the gold tom, nodding her head a slight fraction. He had always been dependable and reliable and loyal.
And, of course, Blackheart. You work far too hard, Blackheart. I worry for you sometimes She murmured quietly to him, ripping off the leg of a rabbit and offered it to him. Afterall, she was sure it would taste better than the flea he was currently assaulting.
---
Shilokit's gold eyes blazed like tiny fires on her pretty face, half-hidden by her fluffy tail. She glared mutinously as the alleged poor sap, apparently the young tom Duo, decided to stray over to play. What was this nonsense! Playing was for kits who had nothing better to do!
She did not act, merely watched him with blazing eyes that was almost comical on a kitten her size. She did not act of course, until he slammed down beside her, coating her with a blanket of dry leaves. She growled, jerking back, the fur along her spine raising up. Then, Duo made the mistake of looking away as he raised up his paws. She darted forward, tackling him into his mid-drift, perching upon his chest with scornful, pretty eyes. A good warrior never lets his opponent catch him off-guard She said proudly, almost enough to make a cat like Blackheart smile. His daughter was apparently coming along nicely.
She hopped off the playful Duo, raising her solemn and grouchy eyes to glance at whatever he was looking at apparently.

Suddenly, it seemed as if the camp came alive with loyal, much trusted warriors. Blackheart looked up from his digging for a moment, over to his clan leader, before down to Onyxdart with a deceptively rawr grimace at her innocent look but an ever so slight nod towards her words. Well. He had honestly just gotten back from hunting, but he supposed that he could go with her out on a short patrol and see what they could bring back for the rest of the clan.
Yellow eyes flicked over to Amberstar when she spoke, shaking his head slightly as he reached down for the leg of the rabbit and tossed it over in Shilokit’s direction, seeking for his daughter to have a bit of a snack herself. Always one to look out for his family and his clan first…things never did change. “I do my duty.” He finally rumbled lowly, not seeming bothered in the least by the appearance of both Sunpelt and Duo – turning his head to give a slight not towards the loyal golden warrior. Hm… “A patrol around the river’s edge sounds good right about now. The fresh kill pile isn’t low yet, but it can never hurt to keep it stocked.”
Rising to his paws, he waited for the other two’s reactions in silence.

Oh look. Others.
Blue eyes wavered from the cricket for just a moment as one….no two...no, three other cats entered the scene – Onyxdart, Sunpelt, and Duo – but he gave no spoke indication of even noticing the other three. One ear flicked back almost cautiously, but not towards them, before he subtly looked back to the insect, padding towards it almost as slowly as a slug, placing one paw down and rising another ever silently, ever slowly.
Closer. Clooooooooser.
When he finally made it about a foot from the cricket he paused, one paw raising in the air with a rapidly flicking tail, staring it down with narrowed eyes. He was so close. Muscles tensed in his hind legs and he suddenly sprung forward in a pounce, slamming gracelessly down just seconds after the cricket hopped…but the bugger had the nerve to land chirping on the tom-kit’s head. Both ears flattened backwards immediately and he looked upwards cross-eyed to try to see the bug before shaking his head wildly to knock it off. “Get back here!” He gave a not so mighty growl and charged after the hopping, chirping cricket, darting over Onyxdart and nearly slamming full tilt into his momma.

Onyx offered Blackheart a quirky little grin, and then got up, her ear flicking out sideways towards the slight motion of Ghostkit hunting a cricket. She didn't look his way- it was more a natural reaction to sound than an active noticing.
"Okay! The hunting around the river should be good right now," Onyx said. At that moment she also noticed Sunpelt, and she nodded a friendly hello to the kind tom. Then she flicked her tail, and was about to set off in the general direction of the river, when Ghostkit nearly ran her over chasing the cricket he'd been after, and she squawked in surprise, watching him as he nearly careened into Amberstar, with a wide grin on her face.
"Oh crickets," she said somewhat nostalgically. She mostly caught the crickets she chased these days, but they were still kind of fun to chase. She wished they were harder to catch. But she'd have all the hard-to-catch she could ask for shortly- the little animals by the river were clever. She quite liked the challenge.

[glow=brown,3,500]The lithe siamese tom entered the camp, carrying with him a finch and a mouse. Most of the young tom's day had been spent in language tutelage with Lucky, a pretty she-cat who mysteriously knew all about his language and heritage. He had been planning on asking her questions to get answers, but he felt a lil guilty to his adopted clan, for the language lessons often were time consuming. So he had spent the time on the return trips to supply the fresh kill pile.
Gingerly he laid his catch on the fresh kill pile, in honor of the life he had ended to feed his clan, before he looked back to see if Lucky had followed, or was still busy hunting herself. Not immediately seeing her, he eased over to the small gathering of clan cats.[/glow]
"Amberstar-kun, Blackheart-san."
[glow=brown,3,500]Takumi greeted, his tongue thick but now more easily understandable.[/glow]

Golden light flashed off the tip of Sunpelt's tail as it flicked lightly behind him. He was pleased that Amberstar's kits were looking fit and happy. Little Shilokit is just like her father... His equally golden eyes flickered to Blackheart, who was exchanging a short intercourse with his leader and mate... Though the thought was still foreign to Sunpelt.
Ghostkit, the little tom who was so much unlike his sister, was slowly creeping in on an unsuspecting cricket. Watching Ghostkit's poor timing of when to pounce reminded the experienced warrior of his own kithood days. He chuckled quietly at the kit's antics, while his ears remained keened on Blackheart. Thus Sunpelt was fully aware of when Blackheart had addressed the small hunting party.
His gaze realigned themselves to the deputy for a moment. Just long enough to give him a nod in agreement, before movement from the camp entrance caught his eye. Sunpelt recognized Takumi instantly, for he was the only cat in the clan that wore an orange strip of cloth over his forehead. The foreign cat was quiet, often hardly speaking unless to ask a question, often about clan costumes, or to speak a simple greeting. Over time, Sunpelt has noticed that Takumi has adopted well into TreeClan.
"I think we should take Takumi with us, Blackheart." Sunpelt said quietly, so that the Deputy alone could hear. Sunpelt had witnessed Takumi's hunting skills while out on a border patrol. He had been meaning to get Blackheart to see the young tom in action, but alas, Blackheart was known to be a work-aholic... Hopefully Blackheart will see his intentions, and thus accept his proposal.

"Umph!" Grunted Duo, as he landed on his back right smack into the pile of leaves, which, thankfully, had absorbed the impact, and had otherwise sent the leaves scattering in all directions. Duo's orange eyes narrowed into slits, not because he had been shown up by a kit, he was much too light-hearted for that, but because the kit's shadow wasn't large enough to block the bright fall sun from his eyes.
"You sure are right, Shilokit?" He exclaimed. "Glad I'm not going to fight you in a battle... I'd be crow-food!" He purred good-naturedly as he always did.
In a flash of youthful vigor, Duo rolled over and sprang to his feet. He trotted to where he had witnessed Greed disappearing into the foliage, his white tail held erect, where it curled at the tip.
Crawling quietly through the thicked, Duo called for Greed in a whisper, "Psst! Greed! Where are you?"

If they didn't get movin' soon, Onyx was going to lose all semblance of maturity and join in one of the tackling/leaping/hunting games the kits were playing. She bounded over to the exit of the camp and then back to the group, and then halfway to the exit.
"We gooooooin'?" she asked expectantly. Her tail waved back and forth anxiously. She wanted to hunt some voles. They were /fun/. They moved so quickly she missed them half the time, and that was all part of the fun. Failing that, there were always mice. Maybe even birds, although less so than the wooded areas. They were mostly water birds, and big ones at that. Not that Onyx hadn't, in her youthful enthusiasm, tried to take down a duck. She had also once picked on some baby swans. That was until the momma bird came after her like a whole thundering flock of angry swans, making noise and trying to fling her around with her wings. She'd pretty much avoided swans since then.
"Wait... what if there are /swans/ there this time of year?" she asked, tail pausing for a moment as her ears drooped sideways.
