The rather round feline paced around camp, worrying as she thought of the cats at war. She'd miss anyone who happened to be struck down there, it would be such a shame of any of her clanmates to die... They didn't deserve it. But now her paws stopped and she plopped her rump down on the ground, staring at the place where she had watched them leave.
There was one cat she was more worried about than the others.
Her dear dear Sunsetfire.
She kept her eyes on the area she had seen them leave, almost hoping they'd come back, as she lowered her head and licked at her swollen belly.
Kits, kits. Surely when they are born it would cheer her up.
How soon, she wondered briefly as she finished her quick cleaning. Puffin lifted her head and looked around to see if she could find any of the others who were left behind.
The soon-to-be mother now felt a sudden sharp pain, and looked back to her stomach. Very soon, it seemed.
And with this thought, Puffin rose to her feet and tottered off to the nursery.

Now the queen lay curled around two newborn kits, licking them gently on the head in turn. A steady purr was emitted from her, and it appeared she had been right, the kittens did cheer her up. She took a break from licking them, watching her little bundles of joy as they squirmed and mewed, then found their way her to belly to suckle. Her purr grew louder as she watched them.
Names, names, names. She knew she should wait for Sunsetfire to return, but Puffin didn't know when that would be, and the names for the kits just seemed to float into her mind and stay there. She purred louder, as she would give them names of clancats.
The little boy, she thought, will be Cavekit. She watched him lovingly before leaning in and giving him another few licks, which he protested to. After pulling back, she switched her gaze to her little female. Puffin nuzzled her lightly then gave her a lick as well. Lunakit, the new mother decided, would be her name.
"So,", Puffin said as she pulled her head back, then touched her nose on the head of her son. "you are Cavekit,", she now switched and touched her nose to her daughter's head, "and you are Lunakit."
Now she pulled back, looked at both the little balls of fluff, and with a satisfied purr, rested her head on her paws and relaxed.
