Eclipsedopal had been silently circling around the back of the ambush, through the pricker bushes, right behind the fox. She had that special talent. Now she jumped right in front of the fox, into a small clearing in the thorns. Her fur was bushed out and she spat and hissed. You aren't going anywhere! She just hoped to StarClan he stopped.

Ivoryshard snapped at the fox as it darted past him and into a thorn bush. He lowered his head to peer into it at the dox fox.
"You killed almost a whole litter of kittens. My sister is of their kind, and I am with my sister, part of the Clan. Why did you kill the kits?" he replied to the earlier question, just as coolly as the fox had spoken. Then Eclipsedopal jumped out in front of the fox, surprising Ivoryshard with the sudden movement. He startled an stepped back just a pace.

Coyote Runs so far from the pack Eyes full of disdain Snarl at the seeming naivety of others And yet still, you’re here standing To ask yourself why.
“You killed kits, cur.”
Still-legged, the blue-black she-cat snarled, as she padded to her brother’s side. Unlike him she could easily slip into the thorny bushes and seize the fox; dragging him back out for the pack to finish. Yellow hues narrowed, dangerously.
“For what reason do you think we’d let you leave this place alive?”

The fox, feeling safely tucked in his prickly abode, watched his coyote brethren, carefully, making sure he did not foolishly try to follow. "Why? Why not? You know the laws* as well as I do. Them kits would have grown up to take more of the prey. If I spared them I would have starved to death in the long run. Prey doesn't run forever. This you know."
Finished with his speech, the dog fox turned to the cat, who was now the formidable enemy in this tight spot. On her he narrowed his eyes defensively, but he curled no lip less her 'brother' find offense to it. "For the simple reason those kits wouldn't have lasted anyway. Eat or be Eaten. If it wasn't me, it would have been someone else. Besides... she-cat... Tell me your kind doesn't drive mine away?... That they wouldn't kill a fox cub because now would be easier then later? You know you do. I know you do..." then more menacingly, "We know you do."
*Referring to the laws of the wild. 'Kill or be killed.' 'Eat or be eaten.' And the like

There is honor among thieves [ :: ] --begin post--
Quintessence took a step closer, his head tilted in polite confusion...but it was confusion of a strange sort. A faintly ominous sort for the fox. That's about the best this RP-er can discribe it, sadly.
"That sound awful heartless," he meowed evenly, almost amiable, though there was a warning beneath his words. "And isn't it a bit much to assume the kits would die? Thats sounds like an attempt to justify to me." He flicked his tail satisfactorily.
Nodding graciously to Coyotesummer, he said cooly, "As the lady said, why should we let you live? There is nothing you could give us that would prompt us to spare your life."
His aqua eyes glinted subtly. Quint had lived most of his life on the wrong side of the law; mostly, it gave him a rougish, outlaw-ish kind of appeal (which complimented his admittedly excellent looks, not that Quint was the bragging sort), but it had also made him into someone who knew more than he should about those kinds of things. A bribe. The fox was undoubtedly smart enough to catch Quint's drift, despite how smoothly and subtly he extended the offer (by saying it as a completely nonchalant, almost challenging statement).

The fox smiled, his lips pealing back to reveal sharp canine teeth. His tongue lolled. Foxes were the master of mischief, creators of coy. He knew exactly what the he-cat was saying.
"Oh? We've got a little fox tamer here... Well... dear feline friends... imagine what would happen if you did kill me. My little clan isn't going to be happy. The law of life is the ultimate rule of survival. They will not take kindly to those who do not appeal to these laws..."
There... That was his own, lovely little hint... Let's see if they can catch it.

Ivoryshard wasn't really in the mood for riddles. He was never in the mood for riddles... but especially from foxes. They spoke in the absolutely most annoying riddles he had ever heard.
I suggest, cousin, that you speak clearly, and save your breath, lest you need it for running with His voice was a high pitched growl. What was this fox speaking of? A fox clan?
So are the foxes living together now? Last I heard, your kind didn't live in packs. Wasn't that what he'd heard? He was sure he'd never heard of a whole pack of foxes, just pairs or trios, maybe fours.
Then again, stranger things had happened. Cats, after all, had a downright reputation for being solitary.

Quintessence looked at Ivoryshard in surprise. "Isn't it obvious?" he asked, not a trace of scorn in his voice.
Turning his handsome aqua gaze to the fox once more, he said smoothly, "Ah, but do we not reserve the right to seek revenge upon the deaths of the young? If it was a fox kit dead, would you not wish to seek justice?"
A faint flicker of grin crossed his face; a reckless, dangerous grin. Quint was a criminal, and dashing and polite though he may be, he would always be one. Even if he did not...practice the subtle art of thievery. Quint had dealt with harsher threats and more dangerous creatures than this big-talking fox. "...And you certainly are in a sticky position, no?"

Eclipsedopal's coat allowed her to blend in perfectly with the shadows of the thorn hollow, perfectly invisible. The fox had made a mistake of turning his back to her. Sticky indeed, she called out, and then quickly and silently changed position. The fox was only just out of her reach. If a signal was given, she could jump. At this point, a few scratches were nothing to Opal. She could almost imagine-see the throb of his pulse in his fire-furred neck...

"Nope," said Quickwit with finality, his brown eyes alight with joy at the prospect of another brilliance like himself. "At such a plight we move our pups to another, safer den. That usually runs the scent cold. It's another thing entirely if we catch you in the act." Turning to his cousin, the fox gave one one broad, canid smile. "Wouldn't you like to know?"
Black tipped audits twitched, tracing the sound of the cat behind him stalking through the undergrowth. He hadn't forgotten about her... no matter how much she thinks so.
From outside the their little gathering, a sharp yip, similiar to a coyote's, but lacking the size in it, could be heard from the grove just aft of the perpetual gathering. Quickwit's ears perked, but he didn't bother to translate for them. Sly fox's code is always ment to be secret...

"Actually, yeah, I would," Ivoryshard told the fox, dropping all semblance of threat for just a moment as curiosity got the better of him. They had him pretty well surrounded, but his ears easily caught the other fox's call. He didn't glance that way, even as badly as he wanted to.
It was probably a trick, after all. But his ears swiveled that way, and he sniffed the air. How many of them were there? He wasn't very worried for himself- he figured he could easily outrun them, and it'd take a couple to take him down. But he was worried for the cats if there were enough around to ambush.
Surely, surely the foxes were living in packs that big?

The vixen was hidden, downwind from the lot, the others were far too focused on her brother then herself... And they didn't even know the full conversation being held between the two. Her yip was in acceptance of her order. And she would fulfill her duty, but first...
She was nothing but a black blur, a canine whirlwind of tooth and claw. She aimed for the coyote's buttocks, handsomely presented to her by his lack of forethought. Then she turned and ran, quick, agile, and serene as any vixen of her kind.
Quickwit smiled, a sly thing that hinted at more trouble to come. He didn't answer the coyote, at first, it was for his kind and his kind only for the mean time... Then his sister broke rank, his smile mildly irritated that she disobeyed orders, only to break cleanly, slyly, as he saw her motive. A little chaos never hurt anybody...
