A flicker through the grass. A blue object darting through the grass. A frightened blue cat darting through the grass.
She stopped, out of breath. Where to hide? Nowhere. The grass wasn't tall enough to hide her blue-gray pelt. Again, she wished that green cats existed, and her mother was one of them.
Again, a hawk screeched, and the young cat jumped. The hawk swooped, it's shadow coming closer. The young cat jumped out of the way, seeing her life flash before her eyes.
Swipe! The hawk cried angrily as it missed her. The young cat darted forward again, the hawk hot on her tail. Literally. She could see the hawk's mangy brown feathers, and more clearly, it's unblinking golden eyes.
Then, she scented something. Nothing like any of the rogue smells she was used to. A crystaline scent, like the scent of water and growing things. A Clan cat! Maybe, just maybe...
Oh please, she thought. Help me!

The swift, flower-patterned leader walked her borders in complete silence. Not a purr escaped her throat for she didn't want to encourage intruders or predators. Speaking of which, had that been a hawk just a moment ago? Yes, it had seemed like one, a streak of gold-brown feathers. It looked like it was hunting something...
"Get down!" she shouted to the young cat, as she rocketed toward its attacker. Leaping up to meet the hawk's advance, she yowled fiercely and swatted a well-aimed paw at its exposed belly. Seeing the danger, the hawk wheeled away at the last moment, avoiding injury. As Lillystar fell back to land, it beat its wings in a hasty retreat. Once she was back on solid ground, the leader turned to address her stranger.
"So...what on earth are you doing here?"

Shimmer winced and shivered under the older cat's tone and gaze. This cat seemed to consider itself superior to the rogue newcomer, and the young cat respected that.
She dipped her head before mowing, "M-my n-name is Shimmer. I-I-I came here b-because I..." she paused in thought, "'Cause I want a real home!" She blurted out as she finished, then hung back, hoping the older cat would not beat her as many of the rogue cats had done to punish impudent kittens...

Lillystar was a bit taken aback by the kit's stammerings. She thought of all things, the kit would be feeling gratitude, not fear.
"Would you calm down?" she asked, knitting her brows in concern. "I'm not going to eat you, you silly child, but it's a good thing I saw you or that hawk would have."

Shimmer gave a small smile of gratitude, as her belt lay flat and her ears pricked up...just a bit.
She cleared her throat and meowed, "I...don't want to sound rude or something, but...can you please take me back?" And again, this time without visible cringing, she hoped the older cat wouldn't be mad, for it sounded as if she was inviting herself.

Lillystar softened at the kit's expression. This one had clearly had a bad time of it and as usual, her heart went out to kits.
"So, do you think you would be able to serve my Clan as a strong warrior one day?" she asked the kit.

Shimmer looked at herself. Could her scrawny body really be up for hunting and fighting and protecting? Of course it could! She just had to think strong!
Shimmer gave the older feline a beaming cat-smile, and nodded deeply.

Lilystar returned the smile the younger cat gave her. It was nice to have promising youngsters on the borders and she hoped this one would turn out better than say...Murderkit. That one...well he even frightened her a little.
"Well then, you'd better be okay with water, because we have to go through the waterfall to get into camp."

Shimmer's smile diminished a fraction. There had been little or no water where she had lived before, only dirty ponds that the queens had always ushered their kits away from. But...
"I like rain, does rain count?" The kitten asked, her voice brimming with a mixture of uneasiness and confidence.

The leader had to laugh. This kit had never even seen a waterfall before. She gestured with her tail, at the frothy, glistening sheet that was the entrance to MistClan camp.
"That's the waterfall and it's quite a bit heavier than rain, but you'll get used to it." she told the kit. "That or you'll have to become awfully nimble, because the only place to avoid the water is on a tiny strip of land around the outside edges."

Shimmer noticed the gleaming curtain of water, and was intrigued and mystified.
"Woah," was all she could utter. She turned back to the she-cat, meowing, "This is so amazing, I can't wait to come and join your Clan, it'll be so cool? What do we hunt? Are there any cats who will be my friends?" Or at least this is what she had tried to say. It all came out in a small wheeze instead.

Lillystar lowered her tail and swayed in contentedly. This young cat's exuberance would be good for the Clan, especially with war looming.
"All in good time, little one, now come." she said and led the way to the waterfall.

Shimmer squealed happily under her breath, before following her saviour, tail high and ears raised, eyes aglow.
Hopefully, into her new future...
