Cold winds blow...as always they blew for the lonely cats of the world who were looking for someone. One such lonely cat wandered the plains of RisingClan; utterly lost in this strange new world. Her white, ash-gray-tipped fur shimmered in the breeze; her wide, clouded eyes stared into nothing. A blind she-cat with a pretty face. Thus was Kanji.
She searched for the half-forgotten scent of her kin, her ears erect and wary for the sound of an approaching cat. She sensed the sun's rays falling lighter and lighter on her pelt as dusk.
Where?

OOC: Set to happen the day before the meeting in "Life with RisingClan" Broad shoulders and crushing paws...eyes as deep as a Chasm...but a heart that reigns pure...
The thick-furred tom padded his way around the RisingClan territory. Having been sent on patrol early in the day, he was preparing to return, as dusk was falling. Black and silver fur shifted over well strengthened muscles, causing his body to ripple with every step. Ashen paws made marks in the melting snow, chased away by a sudden blast of warmth. A scent caught his attention and he stopped to investigate.
"Excuse me she-cat, what brings you onto RisingClan's lands?" he asked, in his throaty bellow. She was too far off yet for him to properly evaluate her.

Kanji stopped, and turned her face in the direction of the cry, her blind eyes staring. She did not blink. She was a pretty cat, and there was something vaguely familliar in her features. Even more familliar was her dancing, graceful walk. She took several steps toward the voice, her ears angled forward.
A tom. Could he be a RisingClan tom? Could he know who she was looking for?
"Maro shinpuku henchou Kanji, mata maro shinpuku henchou taishi te..." She called out at first in her native language, Japanese, before realizing that this tom would likely as not, not understand her. She frowned. "I...Kanji. Looking for cat." She spoke English slowly and with slight difficulty; her accent was decidedly Japanese, but her words, though awkward, were understandable.

Bottomless eyes...delicate soul...
When the she-cat stepped closer, Chasm could see that she was blind. It was fortunate that she had to come to their borders, for if she had wandered onto BoneClan's terra, there may not have been much left of her. Blind ones could often be taken advantage of and he was glad that she seemed healthy and whole. At first her language confused him, but then she spoke broken words of his tongue, enough for him to decipher her purpose.
"Do you know the name of the cat you are looking for...Kanji was it?" he asked. He had managed to pull the only word that seemed like a name out of her ramble of jibberish, a remarkable feat in his own right.

Kanji nodded slowly, a faint half-smile flickering over her face. This smile was hauntingly familliar; it was subdoed, a ghost of a smile, the smile of a well-known cat. "My half-sister," Kanji explained. This English tongue was difficult for her, and her accent distorted the words slightly, though they still rang clear enough in her sweet bell-like voice. "Her name, Kestrel."

Recognition...something I thought would never come...
Chasm now understood why he felt such sympathy and worry for this cat. She was Kestrel's kin, it was pure instinct! When he took a good look at her, it was true that they looked very much alike. Deep gray hues observed every detail of her face, noticing the slight differences between this blind femme and the leader he cared for.
"Oh, you wish to meet my leader?" he asked, suddenly very interested. "Shall I lead you to her?"

For a moment, Kanji jabbered excitedly in Japanese; when she could finally camp, she stared at Chasm with cool, clouded eyes. It almost seemed as if she could see.
"You know Kestrel?" she asked, her voice calm but excitement thrumming beneath the surface. "How is she? What is she like? Many moons since I last spoke with her; once, I looked at her with eyes that saw. My mother's second daughter, she is, younger."
Her ghost-smile was widening; she had struck gold, finally. "What you thonk of her? Her good cat? Doing well?"
Then Kanji realized that barraging the tom with questions might be overwhelming to him; she added simply, "I would much like to see her. Your name?" Her voice was polite, her english broken but decent enough.

Sweet, sweet surrender...my life keeps changing...but I don't want to stop it...
Chasm tried to decide which question he should answer first. He was surprised to learn that this cat was apparently older than Kestrel, but then again the leader was not old, she simply seemed so wise.
"My name is Chasm, and I will certainly take you to Kestrel if you are able to follow me..." he replied finally.

Kanji smiled and nodded, obviously very pleased. "Merushi^ man man, Chasm-ue!" she meowed almost bubbily, her pawsteps dancing and lighthearted despite her blindness. The wind whispered in her ears; never would she see the dust spin in it, but she could feel the grit on her face.
She padded forward. "You keep close, then I can follow," she meowed gratefully. "I have not seen Kestrel-chan since I was nearly kit," she mused aloud. "I am sure she changed much."

Sometimes surrender isn't so bad...when its to your heart that you are surrendering...
Chasm smiled, even though he realized that she would not be able to see it. He stepped up to her and turned so they were facing the same direction. Slowly, he placed his tail across her shoulders, trying not to startle her.
"I shall lead you like this, so you aren't attacked or wander as we travel," he explained. "Shall we go then?" He waited for confirmation that she was comfortable with this before he started walking.

Kestrel flew across the dry, dusty terrain, her mismatched eyes bright with fierce joy. Flying-time. Plunging into a hillside's deep shadow, and then the wind shifted, brought an unfamilliar scent.
Kestrel slowed. She padded dubiously up the hill, her ears up, her pretty face alert. She crested the hill, and her sharp gaze fell immediatly on the she-cat beside Chasm. A familliar face; Kestrel's eyes flickered in suprise. The she-cat's eyes were wide and clouded-- blind.
K...K...
Nothing. No name, and yet Kestrel was sure she knew the she-cat. "Hello?" she howled into the wind, knowing Chasm and the newcomer could not scent her in this wind.

The wind and the hills hold my heart close now...
Chasm suddenly heard his leader's voice on the wind. Searching with his shadowy eyes, he finally spotted her on a hill above them. Feeling his heart dance with delight, he flicked his tail across Kanji's shoulders and began walking forward.
"What luck you have, Kestrel has come to us!" he whispered excitedly to Kanji. Stepping briskly, but not running for fear of losing Kanji, he closed the distance between them and his leader. When they reached her, he inclined his head to Kestrel and brought Kanji around to stand in front of her sister.
"This cat claims she is your sister...Kanji..." he explained, cautiously.

Kestrel started, and bounded down the hillside. Even in her confusion -and it showed clearly in her bright mismatched eyes- she threw Chasm a fond glance. She had a bit of a soft spot for the poor unfortunate soul.
"K...Kanji?" she muttered.

Kanji let out a mrrrow of delight, and dashed forward, stumbling only slightly, to her half-sister. An image of Kestrel as a fluffy, innocent kit bloomed in Kanji's mind, but now she sensed an entirely different cat.
She frowned; did Kestrel not reconize her?
"You...remember?" she asked.

Kestrel shook her head slowly. "I...no. I remember nothing." She believed the she-cat, though; the resemblance between them, while subtle, was there. A rush of emotion rocked Kestrel; confusion, delight, wonder...
Something seemed to click into place, and Kestrel switched smoothly from English to Japanese.
"Waga nagori is rosuto. Kanji, maro meiki?"
Kanji loked down for a moment, sadly, then replied with a curt sentence, to which Kestrel meowed almost desperately, "Yoi."
Kanji frowned. They both conversed for several minutes, heatedly at times. Kestrel felt a sort of familliarity to this cat, who she knew was her half-sister, however, and she finally stepped forward and licked Kanji's ear affectionately. "Maro. Meiki maro, shikashi maro waga shisuta^."
Then Kestrel turned and padded to Chasm. "She cannot tell me..." she whispered in his ear, a note of loss in her voice. "Either she does not know or will not tell." She did not say exactly what she had been hoping to hear, but maybe Chasm would understand-- her past. Kestrel hovered oddly beside Chasm, her eyes turned down, searching the ground as if it held the information she needed.
Kanji stood a few tail-lengths away, and could not see Kestrel's weary expression nor hear her words.

The pain is ever so slowly...being replaced with something else...
Chasm watched the two fondly, if confusedly. He understood nothing of what they were saying, save for when their individual names popped up. The poor tom had been so restricted and tortured, that he didn't even know that lands existed beyond this one. The continued to speak in their foreign language and he listened intently, trying to discern some idea of what they were saying. Finally, Kestrel walked over to him and whispered quietly in his ear. Judging by what she said, he decided that she must have been asking Kanji about what had happened in her past...
"Perhaps if she has some time to spend with you, she will come around and tell you something..." Chasm said quietly. He rubbed his muzzle against her shoulder, trying to relax her. It was understandable that his leader would feel overwhelmed with war approaching and her sister having just arrived.

Kestrel relaxed slowly, came unwound. "Thank you," she meowed softly.
She turned and bounded to Kanji, her head tilted. "Maro sa sumu Risingclan?"

"Moshikasuruto taishi te ato zanji, sen kumo," Kanji replied with an offhand flick of the tail.
The silvery smoke she-cat turned her blind eyes in Chasm's general direction, taking a few unsteady steps toward him. "I owe you great debt, Chasm-ue," she meowed solemnly, bowind her head. "Thank you much." She forced the words out with difficulty; this English tongue was a hard one.

The sweet, sweet nectar of surrender...is like lifeblood to me...
Chasm at first nodded in response, then remembered her blindness and spoke.
"You are very welcome...both of you..." he added the last bit more quietly. "So, what do you think we should do now...can we allow her into the Clan without protest?" The ebony-silver tom shifted his weight from paw to paw, anxiously. War still loomed on the horizon, would their clan accept a blind member now?

Kestrel looked at Chasm for a moment. "We turn no cat away," she meowed, her voice mildly rebuffing.
To Kanji, she added, "Come, we will show you to camp. You must be tired." She was still slightly stiff and uncomfortable around her half-sister.
Once Kanji had agreed, rather enthusiastically, Kestrel touched her tail to the blind cat's shoulder and padded forward, leading her.

A painful feeling...is this regret?
Chasm realized that his words had been mistaken. Drawing his ears back in worry, he strode up beside his leader and tried to make amends.
"I meant no disrespect Kestrel..." he said warily. "I have no problem with your sister at all, I just fear for her safety in the coming times, with war nearly at our paws...can we really protect her?" His gray eyes searched her face for understanding.

Kestrel frowned, looking slighly bothered. "I'm sorry, Chasm," she mewed quietly in earnest. "I know what you meant. And I hope so." Her eyes stared over Chasm's shoulder at nothing. She looked startlingly like her blind half-sister then.
After a moment, she blinked slowly and refocused her eyes to look directly at Chasm's face. "I certainly hope so," she repeated gravely.

A renewed peace...for the time being...but what is my future?
Chasm relaxed a little, glad that Kestrel was not angry with him. Though her wandering gaze unsettled him and he wondered what was troubling her. For now, he decided to leave the matter alone, she had enough to think about without his questions. Sometimes he just couldn't help being..."nosey," since he knew so little of the world. He walked on her other side, so she was between Kanji and him. Padding close to her, he nuzzled her ear gently, keeping pace easily even without looking. His aim was to surprise her, tickle her even, anything to arouse laughter instead of worry.
